Deer Grate, Metal Deer Grate Comparison
A deer grate is a very heavy structure made of concrete (7000-9000 lbs) or metal (1800- 2500 lbs) that is placed over your driveway entrance, with deer fencing or similar on either side. A deer grate has hollow slats in which the deer won't walk because of uneven footing. Our concrete deer grates are not to be confused with cattle grates or cattle guards. These grates have been proven to exclude deer and other animals and have the proper spacing for that purpose.
Advantages:

Disadvantages:
Very heavy, each grate weighs 8,000 lbs approximately and is difficult to move once placed
Although durable, the concrete can be chipped by snow plows, etc over time
No removable cleanout slats. Manageable but not as easy to clean as a metal grate
Only available in specific sizes, as concrete is poured into forms to create grates
Metal Deer Grate
Advantages:
Lighter in weight than concrete grates. Can be moved with tractors, skid steers, etc
Can accept vehicle traffic for most residential applications
Clean look when installed
Available in different pre-painted colors to suit your driveway design
Each grate has a removable slat for easier grate cleaning
Not as easily damaged by snow plows, won't chip like concrete
Available in more custom sizes, as each grate is custom manufactured for you
Disadvantages:
May need to be anchored unless braced at either end or will move over time
Slightly more expensive than concrete grates
No official engineered weight rating or specifications - note: there has never been an issue to date with grate strength, however
Will rust on the surface eventually but can be re-painted
Delivered on flatbed truck, customer is responsible for unloading grate from truck with machinery
